Problem Understanding

We have an n × m chessboard. A billiard ball moves diagonally like a bishop, but unlike a bishop it reflects off the borders of the board. When it hits a vertical wall, the horizontal component of the direction flips. When it hits a horizontal wall, the vertical component flips. Hitting a corner flips both.

Two balls attack each other if one can eventually pass through the square occupied by the other during its infinite reflected motion. We want the largest possible set of squares such that no two chosen squares lie on the same billiard trajectory.

The core question is really this: how many distinct movement components exist on the board? Every square inside the same component attacks every other square in that component, so we may place at most one ball per component. Since every component contains at least one square, the answer is exactly the number of connected trajectories.

The board dimensions go up to 10^6. That immediately rules out anything that touches every square. Even an O(nm) traversal would require processing up to 10^12 cells, which is impossible within 2 seconds. The solution must use only arithmetic on n and m, ideally logarithmic or constant time.

The tricky part is understanding what reflections actually do. A naive interpretation might treat the motion as complicated bouncing, but geometrically the path behaves like a straight diagonal line on an infinitely tiled board. Missing this transformation makes the problem look much harder than it really is.

There are several easy-to-miss edge cases.

Consider a square board:

4 4

The correct answer is 4, not 1. A careless argument might say every diagonal eventually reflects into every other diagonal, but parity restrictions prevent that. The motion decomposes into several independent cycles.

Now consider:

2 3

The answer is 1. Since gcd(1, 2) = 1, every square belongs to a single trajectory. Any approach that counts ordinary bishop diagonals separately would overcount.

Another subtle case is:

2 2

The answer is 2. The board has only four cells, yet the trajectories split into two disconnected groups. Small boards expose parity mistakes very quickly.

Approaches

A brute-force approach would explicitly build the movement graph. Each square has up to four outgoing reflected diagonal directions. From every cell we could simulate all possible billiard moves, mark reachable cells, and compute connected components.

This works conceptually because the relation "can attack" is exactly graph connectivity. If two cells lie in the same connected component, then one billiard trajectory reaches the other.

The problem is scale. The board may contain 10^12 squares. Even storing one bit per square is impossible. Any traversal over cells immediately fails both memory and time limits.

The key observation is that reflections can be unfolded.

Instead of reflecting the direction at the border, imagine reflecting the board itself. Then the billiard path becomes a straight diagonal line through infinitely many mirrored copies of the board. This is the standard billiard unfolding trick.

Once unfolded, every move follows lines of slope +1 or -1. The important invariant becomes the value of coordinates modulo certain periodicities. After analyzing how reflections connect cells, the entire board splits into exactly:

Why does n-1 and m-1 appear instead of n and m? Because reflections happen at borders between rows and columns. The effective periodicity of the unfolded motion is determined by the distances between borders, which are n-1 vertically and m-1 horizontally.

Algorithm Walkthrough

  2. Compute g = gcd(n - 1, m - 1).

The unfolded trajectories repeat every n - 1 vertical steps and m - 1 horizontal steps. Their interaction is governed by the greatest common divisor. 3. Output g + 1.

Each residue class forms one independent billiard trajectory. The number of such classes turns out to be exactly one more than the gcd.

Why it works

Unfold the reflected board into infinitely many mirrored copies. A billiard trajectory becomes a straight diagonal line.

Two cells belong to the same trajectory exactly when their unfolded coordinates align on the same infinite diagonal. The periodic structure repeats every 2(n-1) vertically and 2(m-1) horizontally, and the number of distinct diagonal cycles is determined by how these periods synchronize.

The synchronization count is gcd(n-1, m-1). Those cycles partition the board into gcd(n-1, m-1) + 1 equivalence classes. Since every cell inside one class attacks every other cell in that class, we may place at most one ball per class, and placing one per class is always possible.

The implementation is intentionally tiny because all the heavy lifting happens in the mathematical reduction.

We subtract one from both dimensions before taking the gcd. This is the most common place to make a mistake. The billiard reflections depend on distances between borders, not the number of cells themselves.

Python's built-in math.gcd already runs in logarithmic time using the Euclidean algorithm, so it easily handles values up to 10^6.

The final +1 comes from the structure of the trajectory partition. Forgetting it produces answers that are consistently one too small on all cases.
