The output is not just geometry. We also need a valid drawing order. Rubik starts with the pen touching the paper, draws one segment after another, and never lifts the pen. No segment of positive length may be traversed twice. Different stars may touch only at vertices.

The format reflects this structure. First we print all points used by the construction. Then, for every star, we specify which five points form its regular pentagon. Finally we print a walk through points, where every consecutive pair means “draw the segment between these two points”.

The critical observation is graph-theoretic. A single pentagram is an Eulerian cycle on five vertices:

Every vertex has degree 2, so one star alone is easy to draw in one stroke. The difficulty comes from combining many stars into one connected Eulerian drawing without overlapping segments.

The limits are tiny. We only need to handle n ≤ 100, so any linear or quadratic construction is trivial. The hard part is not performance but geometry correctness. Coordinates must stay within 5000, stars may intersect only at vertices, and floating-point precision must survive validator checks.

There are several easy ways to accidentally build an invalid construction.

One common mistake is placing stars independently without connecting them. For example, if n = 2 and we place two disjoint pentagrams, each star individually has an Euler cycle, but the whole drawing graph is disconnected. A single-stroke drawing becomes impossible.

Another mistake is connecting stars by reusing an existing edge. Suppose we try to merge two stars by identifying two vertices instead of one. Then some diagonal segment may appear in both stars, violating the “no segment twice” rule.

A more subtle issue is geometric overlap. If stars are too close, diagonals from different stars can cross at non-vertex points. The validator rejects this even if the graph structure is correct. A safe construction must separate stars enough that only intended shared vertices exist.

Finally, many implementations forget that every star must still be regular with side length exactly 10. Scaling or translating is fine, but distorting coordinates independently breaks the definition of the star.

Approaches

The brute-force mindset is to think directly about Eulerian graphs. Each star contributes a 5-cycle in the pentagram traversal order. We could try to generate arbitrary intersections between stars until the whole graph becomes connected and all vertex degrees stay even.

This approach is theoretically workable because the constraints are small. Even a backtracking search over graph connections could finish for n ≤ 100. The problem is geometric consistency. Every time we merge vertices, we must preserve regular pentagon geometry and avoid accidental segment intersections. The graph part is easy, the geometry bookkeeping becomes painful.

The key observation is that one shared vertex is enough to connect two Eulerian components. If two stars share exactly one vertex, the shared vertex degree becomes 4, still even. Repeating this creates a connected Eulerian graph automatically.

That reduces the task to a purely constructive geometry problem:

  1. Build one valid regular pentagram.
  2. Create translated copies.
  3. Make consecutive stars share exactly one vertex.
  4. Keep all other vertices far apart.

A chain construction solves everything cleanly.

Take a regular pentagon with side length 10. Its five vertices are fixed relative coordinates. For each new star, reuse one vertex from the previous star and place the remaining four vertices by translating the entire figure far enough horizontally. Since translations preserve regularity and side lengths, every star remains valid.

Graphically, the whole structure becomes:

Every vertex degree stays even:

  • ordinary star vertices have degree 2
  • shared vertices have degree 4

A connected graph where all degrees are even always has an Eulerian cycle. Since each edge belongs to exactly one star, no segment is repeated.

Algorithm Walkthrough

  1. Construct coordinates of one regular pentagon with side length 10.

A convenient parametrization uses points on a circle. For a regular pentagon with circumradius R, adjacent vertices subtend angle 72°. The side length formula is:

Why it works

Each individual star contributes a 5-cycle, so every local vertex degree is 2. When two stars share exactly one vertex, that vertex degree increases by 2, remaining even. The whole graph is connected because every star shares a vertex with the next one. A connected graph where every vertex has even degree always admits an Eulerian cycle.

No edge can repeat because stars share only vertices, never segments. Large translations prevent unintended geometric intersections. Since every star is obtained by translation of the same regular pentagon, all side lengths remain exactly 10.

The first section computes one canonical regular pentagon. Using trigonometric formulas avoids accumulated geometric errors from iterative rotations.

The base array stores the five local coordinates. Every future star is just a translated copy, which guarantees identical geometry.

The implementation shares exactly one vertex between neighboring stars. The variable last_shared tracks the reused point index. Every additional star inserts only four new points, keeping the total number of points at:

Edge Cases

For n = 1, the graph is just one pentagram. The algorithm outputs five vertices and the cycle:

Every vertex has degree 2, so the graph is Eulerian.

For n = 2, the important detail is the shared vertex. The second star reuses exactly one point from the first star. The shared vertex degree becomes 4, still even. Since the graph is connected, the Eulerian property survives.

For large n, accidental geometric intersections are the danger. The algorithm avoids this by spacing stars 40 units apart horizontally, while the pentagram diameter is much smaller than that. No non-shared segments can intersect.
