Problem Understanding

We have an undirected graph representing intersections and roads inside the park. Some intersections contain volunteers. PMP starts at intersection s, and the bus station is at intersection t.

PMP has weak memory. After talking to a volunteer, he can only remember a path containing at most q intersections excluding the current one. Since path length is measured in roads, this means a volunteer can only guide him along a path of at most q edges.

A volunteer may either guide PMP directly to t, or guide him to another volunteer. Volunteers always cooperate optimally. We must find the minimum q such that PMP is guaranteed to reach t.

The graph has up to 10^5 vertices and 2 * 10^5 edges. Any solution that runs a BFS from every volunteer independently already becomes dangerous. If k is also near 10^5, then an O(k * (n + m)) approach is far beyond the limit.

The structure of the problem is subtle. PMP does not need to memorize the entire route from s to t. He only needs to move between volunteers, and finally from some volunteer to t. That transforms the problem into connectivity among special nodes under a distance threshold.

Several edge cases are easy to mishandle.

Consider this graph:

1 -- 2 -- 3

Volunteer only at 1, start s = 1, target t = 3.

The shortest path from 1 to 3 has length 2, so the answer is 2. A careless solution that only checks volunteer-to-volunteer transitions would incorrectly conclude that reaching t is impossible because t is not a volunteer.

Another tricky case is disconnected graphs.

Even arbitrarily large q cannot help because there is no path from 1 to 4.

One more subtle case appears when using intermediate volunteers reduces the required memory.

PMP can move:

1 -> 3 -> 5

The first segment has length 2, and the second segment also has length 2.

Any solution that only computes the shortest path from s to t misses the actual structure of the problem.

Approaches

The brute-force interpretation is straightforward. Suppose we fix some candidate value q. We can build a new graph whose vertices are volunteers plus the target t.

Two vertices are connected if their shortest-path distance in the original graph is at most q.

Then PMP succeeds exactly when s can reach t inside this compressed graph.

To test a single q, we could run BFS from every volunteer and from t, computing all pairwise distances up to q. If there are k volunteers, this costs roughly O((k + 1)(n + m)).

Trying all possible q values with binary search makes things even worse. In the worst case:

O(log n * k * (n + m))

With all limits near 10^5, this becomes completely infeasible.

The key observation is that the answer depends only on how graph components merge as we gradually allow larger distances.

Suppose we know all pairs of vertices whose shortest-path distance is at most d. Then every such pair effectively becomes connected for PMP when q = d.

This suggests processing distances in increasing order, merging graph regions as they become reachable within the current threshold.

The classic trick for this kind of problem is multi-source BFS combined with DSU.

Imagine all volunteers expanding simultaneously. Every vertex remembers which volunteer reached it first. When BFS waves from two different volunteers meet across an edge, we discover the shortest distance between those two volunteers.

More precisely, if:

dist[u] + dist[v] + 1 = D

and u and v belong to different volunteer sources, then the shortest distance between those volunteers is exactly D.

This generates weighted edges between volunteer components. After sorting these edges by distance, we can union them in increasing order. The first moment when the component containing s becomes connected to the component that can directly reach t gives the answer.

The problem becomes very similar to Kruskal's algorithm on an implicit graph of volunteers.

Algorithm Walkthrough

  1. Run a multi-source BFS starting from all volunteer vertices simultaneously.

Every vertex stores:

owner[v], the volunteer source that reached it first.

dist[v], the distance from that source.

This partitions the graph into Voronoi-like regions around volunteers. 2. During BFS, whenever we examine an edge (u, v) whose endpoints belong to different owners, we discover a candidate connection between two volunteer sources.

The shortest path between those two sources is:

dist[u] + dist[v] + 1

because the path goes from one source to u, crosses the edge, then reaches the other source from v. 3. Store all such candidate edges between volunteer sources.

Multiple edges may connect the same pair of sources. That is fine because Kruskal-style processing naturally ignores worse duplicates. 4. We also need to connect volunteers to the target t.

Run a normal BFS from t to compute shortest distances from every vertex to t. 5. For every volunteer source x, record dt[x], the shortest distance from that volunteer to t.

If PMP has memory q >= dt[x], then volunteer x can directly guide him to the buses. 6. Sort all volunteer-connection edges by distance. 7. Create a DSU over volunteer sources plus one extra node representing the target. 8. Process candidate edges in increasing order of distance.

When processing an edge with weight w, union the two volunteer components. 9. Separately, sort volunteers by their distance to t.

Whenever dt[x] <= current_weight, union volunteer x with the special target node. 10. The first weight at which the start volunteer and the target node become connected is the minimum valid q. 11. If connectivity never happens, output -1.

Why it works

The multi-source BFS guarantees that every meeting of two BFS regions produces the true shortest distance between the corresponding volunteer sources. This is the same property used in shortest-path Voronoi decompositions.

Processing edges in increasing order simulates gradually increasing the allowed memory limit q.

At any moment during processing, two volunteers belong to the same DSU component exactly when PMP can travel between them using segments of length at most the current threshold.

Similarly, once a volunteer is connected to the special target node, PMP can travel from that volunteer directly to t.

The first threshold where s becomes connected to t is precisely the smallest feasible memory limit.

The first BFS grows simultaneously from every volunteer. Each node records which volunteer reached it first and at what distance. When two regions touch across an edge, we obtain a shortest-path connection between the corresponding volunteers.

The second BFS computes ordinary shortest distances to the target. This tells us when each volunteer can directly guide PMP to t.

The DSU stage behaves like Kruskal's algorithm. As the threshold increases, more volunteer pairs become traversable. Once the start volunteer becomes connected to the special target node, the current threshold is the answer.

One subtle detail is handling unreachable targets. If dt[s] == -1, then even unrestricted movement cannot reach t, so we immediately print -1.

Another important implementation detail is using <= current while processing edges and volunteer-to-target links. All connections with weight at most the current threshold must already be active before checking connectivity.
