Problem Understanding

We are given a weighted tree rooted at hall 1, where Gerald starts. The treasure is hidden uniformly at random in one of the other halls. Gerald only discovers the treasure when he first enters the correct hall.

The restriction that changes the problem completely is that every corridor collapses after being traversed twice. Since the graph is a tree, this means Gerald must plan a traversal that can still reach every node exactly once before some corridor becomes unusable. In practice, every edge may either be used once, or used twice as part of going down into a subtree and later returning.

For every node v ≠ 1, define t[v] as the first time Gerald enters v. The goal is to minimize the average of all these first-arrival times.

The input describes a tree with up to 10^5 vertices and weighted edges. A quadratic or cubic algorithm is immediately impossible. Even O(n log^2 n) would be unnecessary overhead here. Since the structure is a tree, we should expect a linear or O(n log n) solution based on DFS and local decisions.

The difficult part is that Gerald is not choosing a shortest path to a known target. He is choosing an exploration order before knowing where the treasure is. Different subtree orders change the expected discovery time dramatically.

A common mistake is to think that locally taking the shortest edge first is always optimal. Consider this tree:

The smaller edge should indeed come first here, but the real reason is not the edge length itself. It is the amount of future delay imposed on the remaining unexplored nodes.

Another easy bug appears when two subtrees have very different sizes. Consider:

Suppose subtree A contains 100 nodes while subtree B contains only 1 node. A greedy rule based only on edge weights would choose A first because 10 < 11, but that is not enough reasoning. The correct ordering depends on how many nodes get delayed while we explore another subtree.

A final subtlety is that the root itself is never a treasure location. The expectation is divided by n - 1, not n. Forgetting this shifts every answer slightly and often passes small manual tests accidentally.

Approaches

A brute-force approach would enumerate all valid traversal orders. At every node, we may choose the order in which to explore children, and these choices recursively combine across the tree.

For a node with degree d, there are d! possible local orders. Across the whole tree, the number of global traversals becomes enormous. Even for a moderate tree with many branching points, this becomes completely infeasible.

Still, the brute-force idea reveals something useful. The only meaningful decisions are the relative orders of sibling subtrees. Once we enter a subtree, we must eventually finish exploring it before permanently losing access to its edges. So the problem reduces to deciding in what order to process child subtrees.

Suppose we stand at node u and compare two child subtrees A and B.

Let:

  • sz[A] be the number of treasure-candidate nodes inside subtree A
  • cost[A] be the total traversal time spent while fully exploring subtree A and returning to u

If we process A before B, then every node inside B gets delayed by cost[A].

Similarly, processing B first delays every node inside A by cost[B].

So:

  • A before B adds extra delay cost[A] * sz[B]
  • B before A adds extra delay cost[B] * sz[A]

We should place A before B exactly when:

$$cost[A] \cdot sz[B] < cost[B] \cdot sz[A]$$

This is the key insight. The problem becomes a scheduling problem very similar to Smith's rule in job ordering.

Now we only need:

  1. Subtree sizes.
  2. Total exploration cost of each subtree.
  3. A local sort of children by the comparison above.

Since each edge is traversed twice during full exploration, if edge (u,v) has weight w, then:

After sorting children optimally, we simulate the DFS order and accumulate first-visit times.

  1. Root the tree at node 1.

This gives every node a parent and a set of children, making subtree reasoning possible. 2. Run a DFS to compute subtree sizes.

Let sz[u] denote the number of treasure-candidate nodes inside subtree u, including u itself if u ≠ 1. 3. During the same DFS, compute exploration costs.

Let dp[u] be the total time needed to fully explore subtree u and return back to u.

For every child v connected by edge weight w:

because we must go down and later return along that edge. 4. For every node, sort its children.

When first entering a node v, add the current time to the global answer because this is exactly the discovery time if the treasure is there. 6. After fully exploring a child subtree, advance the current time by its total exploration cost.

That reflects returning to the current node and continuing exploration elsewhere. 7. Divide the accumulated total by n - 1.

The treasure is uniformly distributed among all non-root nodes.

Why it works

Every subtree behaves like a job with two parameters:

  • how long it takes to fully process,
  • how many treasure locations remain blocked until it finishes.

If subtree A is explored before subtree B, then all nodes in B wait through the entire exploration time of A.

The pairwise swap argument proves optimality. Suppose we compare only two consecutive subtrees. Ordering A before B contributes:

$$cost[A] \cdot sz[B]$$

to the total waiting of nodes in B.

Reversing them contributes:

$$cost[B] \cdot sz[A]$$

We choose the smaller one. Since the comparison is transitive, sorting by this rule gives a globally optimal order.

The second DFS exactly simulates that optimal traversal, so every node's first-arrival time is minimized.

The first DFS computes two structural quantities.

sz[u] counts how many valid treasure positions exist in subtree u. The root is excluded because the treasure never starts there.

dp[u] measures the total traversal time needed to completely explore subtree u and come back to u. Every edge contributes twice because exploration requires both entering and returning.

The sorting step is the heart of the solution. A common implementation mistake is using floating-point division like:

cost[a] / sz[a]

This may introduce precision issues. Cross multiplication avoids that entirely.

The second DFS simulates the actual traversal order. The variable now represents the time when we are back at node u and ready to start the next child subtree.

Another subtle point is that the recursive call enters child v at time now + w, not now. The edge traversal itself consumes time before first reaching v.

All arithmetic fits safely in Python integers because the maximum total traversal length is at most about:
