Problem Understanding

We have a grid containing chips. Every chip stores one direction, left, right, up, or down.

When we start a move from some chip, the process behaves like this:

The current chip looks in the direction of its arrow. Among all remaining chips in that row or column, we pick the closest chip in that direction. The current chip disappears, and the found chip becomes the new current chip. We repeat this until no chip exists in the required direction. Then the last chip also disappears and the move ends.

The score of the move equals the number of deleted chips.

The task is to compute two values:

First, the maximum score obtainable from a single starting chip.

Second, how many starting chips achieve that maximum.

The grid size is at most 5000 cells total. That changes the nature of the problem completely. We are not dealing with a huge sparse structure where only linear scans matter. An $O((nm)^2)$ approach may still be borderline, but anything cubic is completely impossible.

The dangerous part is that the board changes during the process. When a chip disappears, future jumps may skip over it and land farther away. A naive simulation that repeatedly scans rows and columns can accidentally recompute too much work.

There are several edge cases that easily break incorrect implementations.

Consider a chain that loops forever if we forget that removed chips disappear immediately:

The left chip points right, so we move to the right chip and delete the left one.

Now only the right chip remains. It points left, but there is no chip anymore, so it disappears and the process ends.

The correct answer is 2, not an infinite cycle.

Another subtle case is when multiple chips exist in the same direction but only the nearest matters:

Starting from the first chip, we jump to the third cell, not the fourth. A careless implementation that takes any reachable chip produces the wrong path.

Another common mistake is assuming the process depends only on graph edges built from the initial board. It does not.

Cell 3 points to cell 2.

If we start from cell 1, then cell 1 disappears. From cell 2, the nearest chip to the right is now cell 3. After cell 2 disappears, cell 3 has nobody to the left anymore. The move length is 3.

A static graph misses these dynamic changes.

Approaches

The most direct approach is to simulate the game independently for every starting chip.

We maintain the current set of alive chips. At each step, from the current position, we scan outward in the required direction until we find the nearest alive chip. Then we delete the current chip and continue.

This is correct because it follows the rules exactly.

The problem is speed. Suppose the board contains $K$ chips. One simulation may delete all $K$ chips, and each step may scan an entire row or column. In the worst case that becomes $O(K^2)$ for one start, and $O(K^3)$ overall. With $K \le 5000$, this is hopeless.

The key observation is that deletions only affect local neighbors inside rows and columns.

Suppose a chip at position $(r,c)$ disappears. Then only four relationships change:

The nearest chip to the left may now connect to the nearest chip to the right.

The nearest chip above may now connect to the nearest chip below.

Nothing else changes.

This is exactly the same idea as deleting nodes from a doubly linked list.

For every chip, we store four pointers:

The nearest chip left in the same row.

The nearest chip right in the same row.

The nearest chip up in the same column.

The nearest chip down in the same column.

Now deleting a chip becomes $O(1)$. We simply reconnect its neighbors.

The remaining challenge is that each simulation modifies the structure, so we cannot permanently destroy it. The standard trick is rollback.

During a simulation, every pointer update is recorded onto a stack. After the simulation finishes, we undo all modifications and restore the original structure.

Each deletion causes only constant pointer changes. Since each chip is deleted at most once during one simulation, the total work per simulation becomes linear in the number of deleted chips.

Across all starting chips, the complexity becomes $O(K^2)$, which fits comfortably for $K \le 5000$.

Algorithm Walkthrough

  1. Read the grid and assign an integer id to every chip.

Empty cells are ignored completely because they never participate in the game. 2. For every row, connect consecutive chips using left and right pointers.

If chip A is immediately before chip B in the same row, then:

right[A] = B and left[B] = A. 3. For every column, connect consecutive chips using up and down pointers.

This builds four doubly linked lists around every chip. 4. For every chip as starting position, simulate the move.

We maintain:

  • the current chip
  • the number of deleted chips
  • a rollback stack storing every pointer modification
  1. To continue from a chip, follow the direction written on it.

If the direction is:

  • L, move to left[cur]
  • R, move to right[cur]
  • U, move to up[cur]
  • D, move to down[cur]

Because the linked lists always skip deleted chips, this automatically gives the nearest alive chip in that direction. 6. Before deleting the current chip, reconnect its neighbors.

Example for horizontal neighbors:

If left[cur] = a and right[cur] = b, then after deletion:

  • right[a] = b
  • left[b] = a

The same is done vertically. 7. Every changed pointer is pushed onto the rollback stack as:

This lets us restore the exact previous state later. 8. Continue until the next chip does not exist.

The current chip is still deleted before stopping, exactly matching the game rules. 9. After finishing one simulation, compare the obtained score against the global maximum. 10. Roll back all pointer changes using the stored stack.

This restores the original board for the next starting chip.

Why it works

At every moment, the linked lists represent exactly the currently alive chips in each row and column.

Deleting a chip reconnects its immediate neighbors, so future traversals automatically skip removed chips and land on the nearest remaining chip. Since every move in the game only depends on nearest alive neighbors, the simulation precisely matches the rules.

Rollback restores every modified pointer to its previous value, so each starting simulation begins from the untouched original board.

The first stage converts the grid into compact chip ids. This matters because empty cells never participate in the game, and working only with chips keeps all arrays small.

The four neighbor arrays form doubly linked lists over rows and columns. For example, RIGHT[x] always means the nearest alive chip to the right of chip x.

The simulation loop follows exactly the game definition. Before deleting the current chip, we compute the next chip using the current pointers. After deletion, the pointers are rewired so future searches skip the removed chip.

The rollback stack is the most delicate part. Every pointer modification must store the previous value before overwriting it. Missing even one update corrupts later simulations.

Another subtle point is that the last chip must also be counted and deleted even when no next chip exists. That is why score increases before checking nxt.

Edge Cases

Consider again the cyclic configuration:
