Problem Understanding

We are given an undirected multigraph. Floors are vertices, staircases are edges. Harry starts at floor 1 and wants to visit every floor at least once.

The graph is dynamic. Between Harry's walks, Ron and Hermione may modify staircases. A modification picks one endpoint of an edge and reconnects it to another vertex. Every staircase may be modified at most once.

The output is not just whether the task is possible. We must also explicitly describe a sequence of walks and edge modifications. Harry may walk arbitrarily far between two modifications, but every consecutive pair of floors in his walk must currently be connected by a staircase.

The graph can contain multiple edges between the same pair of vertices, which matters because staircases are identified individually by index. Moving staircase 5 is different from moving staircase 8, even if both currently connect the same pair of floors.

The constraints are large enough that quadratic graph algorithms are impossible. With n ≤ 100000 and m ≤ 200000, the solution must stay close to linear time. Traversing the graph a constant number of times is fine. Anything like recomputing connectivity after every edge move would immediately exceed the limit.

The most dangerous edge case is a graph with no staircase touching floor 1.

Harry starts isolated on floor 1. Since he cannot move anywhere and no staircase incident to 1 exists, there is no way to bring another floor into his connected component. The correct answer is:

A careless solution that only checks whether the graph has at least one edge would incorrectly claim success.

Another subtle case is a disconnected graph where some component has no spare staircase.

Example:

Floors 3 and 4 are isolated. No staircase can ever reach them because every move preserves the total number of edges. One staircase can connect at most two vertices, so a graph with too few edges can never become fully searchable. The correct answer is NO.

A third important case is when the graph already connected.

No staircase must be moved at all. The algorithm should output a valid walk and 0 modifications. Solutions that always try to reconnect components may accidentally move useful edges and break connectivity.

The final tricky situation is a component consisting of a single isolated vertex.

Vertices 4 and 5 have degree zero. They can never become reachable because modifying an edge only changes one endpoint, and every staircase already belongs to another component. We need at least one staircase per missing component to attach it later. Since isolated vertices contain no staircase, the answer is NO.

Approaches

A brute-force approach would model the whole process explicitly. At every step we could try all possible staircase moves, recompute the reachable vertices from Harry's current position, and search for a sequence that eventually visits every floor.

The state space explodes immediately. Each staircase can potentially reconnect to O(n) different vertices, and there are up to 200000 staircases. Even exploring one layer of possibilities already requires billions of transitions. Recomputing connectivity after each move would itself cost O(n + m).

The key observation is that the exact staircase layout barely matters. What matters is whether Harry can reach at least one staircase inside a connected component.

Suppose Harry currently reaches some connected component A, and another component B contains at least one staircase. Then we can steal one staircase from B, reconnect one endpoint into A, and instantly merge the two components. After that, Harry can traverse all of B.

This reduces the problem to a structural question:

Can every connected component except possibly isolated vertices contribute one staircase to connect itself to the growing explored region?

A component with at least one edge always can. Take any edge (u, v) in that component. Remove one endpoint and reconnect it to some already reachable vertex x. The component stays internally connected through the remaining endpoint, and now it also touches x.

The only impossible situation is an isolated vertex component. Such a component contains no staircase to move, so it can never become reachable unless it already equals vertex 1.

This gives a clean criterion:

The task is possible if and only if every connected component except possibly the one containing 1 has at least one edge.

Once we know this, constructing the actual process becomes easy. We first DFS through the component containing 1. Then for every other component with an edge, we:

  1. Move one staircase to connect that component to the already explored region.
  2. Walk through the whole newly connected component.
  3. Continue expanding.

Everything becomes linear because every vertex and edge is processed only a constant number of times.

Algorithm Walkthrough

  1. Build the undirected graph with edge indices.

We need adjacency lists because the graph is sparse and large. Each adjacency entry stores both the neighboring vertex and the staircase index. 2. Find all connected components using DFS.

For every component, collect:

  • all vertices in the component,
  • one arbitrary staircase index inside it, if such a staircase exists.

Components without any edge are isolated vertices. 3. Check feasibility.

If vertex 1 belongs to an isolated component and n > 1, Harry can never leave floor 1.

More generally, every component other than the starting one must contain at least one staircase. Otherwise there is no staircase available to reconnect that component to the explored region. 4. Generate an initial traversal inside the component containing vertex 1.

We run DFS and record a walk that moves along existing staircases. Standard DFS entry/exit recording works:

  • append the current vertex when entering,
  • after returning from a child, append the current vertex again.

This produces a valid walk through the entire connected component. 5. Maintain one reachable anchor vertex.

Any already visited vertex works. We keep using vertex 1 for simplicity. 6. Process every remaining component.

Pick the stored staircase (u, v) from that component.

Move this staircase so that it becomes (1, v).

Now the component is connected to Harry's reachable region through vertex 1. 7. After the modification, perform DFS traversal of that component.

Start from v, since it is now reachable from 1.

Record the walk exactly as before. 8. Concatenate all walk segments and modification descriptions into the required output format.

Why it works

The invariant is that before processing a new component, all previously processed components form one connected reachable region containing vertex 1.

When we choose an edge (u, v) inside an unprocessed component and reconnect it to (1, v), we do not disconnect the component internally from v. Every vertex previously reachable from v remains reachable. The new edge also creates a path from vertex 1 into this component, so the invariant expands to include the new component.

Every non-isolated component contains at least one edge, so this operation is always possible. Isolated vertices cannot contribute any staircase and can never become connected later, which is exactly why the feasibility condition is necessary.

Since every component is processed once, eventually all vertices become reachable and are visited by Harry.

The first part builds the graph and stores every staircase by index. The edge index matters because the output must specify exactly which staircase gets moved.

The component DFS serves two purposes simultaneously. It labels connected components and also remembers one arbitrary staircase from each component. That staircase later becomes the bridge used to connect the component into the explored region.

The feasibility test is subtle. Isolated vertices outside Harry's starting component immediately make the task impossible because no staircase exists to attach them later. The special check for the starting component handles the case where vertex 1 is isolated while the graph contains other vertices.

The traversal DFS records an actual walk, not just a visitation order. Whenever DFS returns from a child, we append the parent again because Harry must physically walk back along the staircase.

The construction phase processes components one by one. For every component we move one stored staircase so that one endpoint becomes vertex 1. After that modification, the component becomes reachable and we append a valid DFS walk through it.

One easy mistake is forgetting that the graph itself is not updated after edge modifications. The implementation avoids this entirely by only using the modifications conceptually. The recorded walks are built inside the original component structure, which remains traversable after reconnecting one endpoint.

Another common bug is producing consecutive equal vertices in the walk. The DFS construction naturally avoids this because every appended vertex corresponds to traversing an actual edge.

Edge Cases

Consider the isolated starting vertex case again:
