The task is to count how many different squares can be reached using at most k knight moves.

At first glance this sounds like a shortest path problem on an infinite graph. Every board square is a vertex, knight moves are edges, and deleted cells are forbidden vertices. We need the number of vertices whose shortest distance from (0,0) is at most k.

The infinite board is the main obstacle. Even without deleted squares, the reachable region after 10^18 moves is enormous. Any direct BFS over states is impossible.

The deleted squares are heavily constrained. There are at most 440 removed cells, and every deleted coordinate lies inside [-10,10] × [-10,10]. This is the real structural clue. The board is infinite, but all irregularity is concentrated near the origin. Far away from the deleted cells, the knight behaves exactly like on a normal infinite board.

The value of k is also extreme. Since it can be as large as 10^18, even algorithms linear in k are hopeless. The solution must derive the answer from geometric or algebraic structure rather than simulating moves.

A subtle edge case appears when the starting cell itself is isolated by deleted cells. Consider:

The knight has no legal move, but with k = 0 the starting square is still reachable. The correct answer is 1. A careless implementation that only counts squares discovered by BFS transitions could incorrectly produce 0.

Another tricky situation is parity. A knight alternates color every move, so after an even number of moves it can only stand on squares of the same color as the origin. Suppose there are no deleted cells and k = 1. The reachable squares are exactly the origin plus the eight immediate knight jumps, so the answer is 9. Any formula that counts all lattice points inside some geometric radius without respecting parity will overcount.

The hardest edge case is disconnected infinite regions caused by deleted cells near the origin. Small local obstacles can permanently block some paths and increase distances to certain nearby cells, but they cannot affect the large-scale asymptotic structure infinitely far away. The algorithm must separate the finite “damaged zone” from the infinite regular area. Missing this distinction leads either to infinite BFS or to incorrect assumptions that deleted cells only matter locally.

Approaches

The most direct approach is BFS from (0,0). Every time we pop a square, we generate the eight knight moves and ignore deleted cells. If the distance is at most k, we continue expanding.

This works perfectly on finite boards because shortest paths in unweighted graphs are exactly what BFS computes.

The problem is scale. Even without deleted cells, the number of squares reachable within distance k grows quadratically with k. For k = 10^18, the number of reachable states is around 10^36. No explicit traversal can even scratch the surface.

So brute force fails because the board is infinite, but the deleted region is tiny. That asymmetry is the key insight.

Far from the origin, the knight effectively moves on the standard infinite chessboard. Distances there follow a stable geometric pattern. The deleted cells only perturb distances inside a bounded neighborhood.

This suggests splitting the problem into two parts.

First, compute exact shortest distances in the finite disturbed area around the deleted cells.

Second, understand the infinite regular structure outside that area and count those cells analytically.

The crucial observation is that once we move sufficiently far away from all deleted cells, every shortest path can be rerouted freely. The knight graph regains translation symmetry. Distances then depend only on broad geometric properties, mainly parity and large-scale movement speed.

The standard infinite knight graph has a well-known metric. For large coordinates, the knight reaches approximately every second lattice point in a diamond-like growth region. More importantly, outside a bounded area the graph behaves periodically. This allows the infinite count to be reduced to counting lattice points satisfying linear inequalities and parity conditions.

The final algorithm builds a finite graph around the obstacle region, computes exact distances there, and then attaches analytic formulas for the infinite exterior.

Algorithm Walkthrough

  1. Construct a sufficiently large finite window around the deleted region.

Since all deleted cells lie inside [-10,10], every “interesting” shortest path modification also stays near that area. We take a larger square such as [-50,50] × [-50,50]. Outside this window, the knight graph behaves normally again. 2. Run BFS from (0,0) inside this finite window.

Every legal knight move between non-deleted cells becomes an edge. BFS gives the exact shortest distance from the origin to every square in the disturbed area. 3. Identify boundary states.

A boundary state is a square near the edge of the finite window. From these squares onward, shortest paths no longer interact with deleted cells. Their future behavior matches the ordinary infinite knight graph. 4. Use the known infinite-board knight distance formula outside the disturbed region.

For the standard infinite knight graph, the shortest distance to (x,y) can be computed directly from the coordinates using a closed formula plus a few small exceptions.

The formula works because knight movement has stable asymptotic geometry. Large movements are governed by linear progress constraints and parity. 5. For every boundary square, propagate distances analytically into the infinite exterior.

Suppose BFS computed distance d to some boundary square b. For an exterior square p, the total distance is:

d + dist_knight_standard(b, p)

because outside the disturbed zone no deleted cells interfere anymore. 6. Count all squares whose computed distance is at most k.

Squares inside the finite window are counted directly from BFS distances.

Infinite exterior regions are counted using geometric formulas over lattice points satisfying the distance bound.

Why it works

The correctness comes from locality of the obstacles.

Deleted cells exist only in a bounded region. Any shortest path to a sufficiently distant square spends only a finite prefix inside the disturbed area and then travels through completely unobstructed space.

BFS computes the exact optimal prefix cost inside the disturbed area. After leaving that region, the standard knight metric becomes valid again because no future move can encounter deleted cells.

So every shortest path decomposes into two independent pieces: a finite obstacle-dependent prefix and a regular infinite-board suffix. Since the decomposition covers all possibilities and BFS already minimized the prefix cost, the combined distances are exact.

The implementation starts with a standard BFS over a bounded region. The constant LIMIT = 60 is chosen large enough that deleted cells near the origin cannot affect shortest paths near the border.

The helper knight_dist contains the classical infinite-board knight distance formula. The special cases (1,0) and (2,2) are necessary because the asymptotic formula fails there.
