Problem Understanding

We are given an undirected graph and, for every vertex, the parity of how many times that vertex must appear in a walk.

A walk is represented by a sequence of vertices. Consecutive vertices in the sequence must be connected by an edge. Vertices and edges may be revisited many times. The walk may start and end anywhere, and it may even be empty.

For each vertex v, we know whether it must appear an even number of times or an odd number of times in the final walk. Our task is to construct any valid walk whose visit counts match all required parities. If no such walk exists, we output -1.

The graph contains up to 10^5 vertices and 10^5 edges. Any solution that tries to search over possible walks is immediately impossible. Even storing all candidate states would explode combinatorially. The constraints strongly suggest a linear or near-linear graph traversal.

The most important observation is that only parity matters. We do not care whether a vertex is visited 1 time or 17 times, only whether the count is odd or even. Problems involving parity often become much simpler because adding two visits cancels out modulo 2.

Several edge cases are easy to mishandle.

Consider a disconnected graph:

Vertices 3 and 4 are isolated from the component containing vertex 1. Vertex 3 requires odd parity. Since no walk can reach it from another component, the answer is impossible.

Another subtle case is when all parities are zero:

The empty walk is valid. A solution that always starts a DFS somewhere would unnecessarily introduce visits and break the parity requirements.

A third tricky situation occurs when the total number of required odd vertices is odd:

This is actually solvable. The walk [1] visits vertex 1 once and vertex 2 zero times.

Many graph parity problems require an even number of odd vertices, but that rule applies to edge degrees in Euler paths. Here we count vertex occurrences, so the condition is different.

Approaches

A brute-force approach would try to construct a walk and keep track of the parity vector of all vertices. Each state consists of the current vertex and the parity of every vertex visited so far.

Even for a graph with only 30 vertices, there are 2^30 possible parity masks. With 10^5 vertices, the state space is unimaginably large. This direction is hopeless.

The key observation is that we do not need to search for a walk. We can directly build one using a DFS tree.

Suppose we choose some root and perform a DFS. When DFS finishes processing a child subtree and returns to the parent, we know whether that subtree already satisfies all parity requirements.

If a vertex currently has the wrong parity, we can fix it locally by recording one extra visit to that vertex. Doing so flips only that vertex's parity. When we return to the parent, the parent's parity also changes because the DFS walk visits the parent again.

This suggests processing vertices from the leaves upward. Every subtree can be made correct before control returns to its parent. The only vertex whose parity cannot be freely adjusted is the DFS root, because it has no parent above it.

This transforms the problem into a constructive DFS on a connected component. We generate the actual walk while simultaneously fixing parities.

The graph may be disconnected. Any vertex requiring odd parity must belong to the chosen DFS component, otherwise it can never be visited. We handle this by selecting a root among vertices with required parity 1. If no such vertex exists, the empty walk is already valid.

Algorithm Walkthrough

  1. Read the graph and the required parity array.
  2. Count how many vertices require odd parity.
  3. If this count is zero, output an empty walk. Every vertex already has even parity because it is visited zero times.
  4. Choose any vertex whose required parity is 1 as the DFS root.
  5. Run DFS from this root.
  6. When DFS first enters a vertex v, append v to the answer sequence and flip the current parity state of v.
  7. For every unvisited neighbor to, recursively process that child.
  8. After returning from a child, append v again and flip the parity state of v.

This corresponds to walking back along the DFS tree edge. 9. After all children are processed, compare the current parity of v with the required parity. 10. If they differ and v is not the root, append v once more and flip its parity. Then append its parent and flip the parent's parity.

This represents traversing the tree edge one extra time. It fixes v permanently while pushing the parity discrepancy upward to the parent. 11. If they differ and v is the root, the root cannot push the discrepancy anywhere. The construction fails. 12. After DFS finishes, check whether every vertex requiring parity 1 was visited. If not, some required vertex lies in another connected component, so output -1. 13. Otherwise output the constructed sequence.

Why it works

The DFS maintains the invariant that once processing of a non-root vertex finishes, that vertex's parity exactly matches its requirement and will never change again.

Leaves are handled first. If a leaf has incorrect parity, one additional visit to the leaf and a return to its parent flips only the leaf and the parent. The leaf becomes correct permanently.

Inductively, when processing an internal vertex, all child subtrees are already fixed. Any remaining mismatch at the current vertex can be corrected in exactly the same way, by adding one extra traversal through its parent edge.

Every parity discrepancy is pushed upward through the DFS tree. Eventually all discrepancies accumulate at the root. If the root's parity also matches its requirement, every vertex is correct. If not, no valid walk exists inside that connected component because there is no parent above the root to absorb the final mismatch.

The resulting sequence is always a valid walk because every consecutive pair of recorded vertices corresponds to traversing a graph edge.

The array cur stores the parity currently achieved by the constructed walk. Every time a vertex is appended to the answer sequence, its parity flips.

Entering a vertex contributes one visit, so we append it immediately and toggle cur[v].

After returning from a child, the walk is physically back at the parent, so we append the parent again. This matches the actual traversal and correctly updates parity.

The most delicate part is the mismatch correction. When a non-root vertex ends with the wrong parity, we append its parent. The current vertex was already the last vertex in the sequence, so moving to the parent performs one additional traversal of that tree edge. This flips the parent parity while leaving the child fixed.

The root is special. Every other vertex can push a parity mismatch upward, but the root has nowhere to send it. If the root remains incorrect, no solution exists.

The final connectivity check is essential. A disconnected component containing a required odd vertex can never be reached from the chosen root. Without this check, the algorithm would incorrectly output a partial solution.
