The task gives a tree of hotels, where every road connects two hotels and moving along a road costs one unit of time. For each query, two hotels are chosen as main event locations. Every other hotel assigns itself to whichever of these two main hotels is closer in shortest-path distance, and each participant then travels to their assigned main hotel.

For each pair of chosen main hotels, we need to determine the worst travel time among all participants, meaning the maximum over all nodes of their distance to the nearer of the two selected centers.

The structure is a tree with up to 100000 nodes and the same number of queries. Each query is independent, but must be answered fast enough that recomputing distances from scratch per query is impossible.

A naive approach would run a BFS or DFS from both chosen nodes for every query, compute all distances, and scan all nodes to take the minimum of the two distances. This already costs O(n) per query, leading to O(nm), which is far beyond acceptable limits.

A less naive idea would precompute all-pairs shortest paths, but a tree with 100000 nodes makes that infeasible in both time and memory.

A subtle failure case for greedy intuition appears when the farthest participant from a chosen center is not structurally “far” in the tree diameter sense. For example, a node deep in a subtree may be far from its assigned center, while still being relatively close to the other center, and vice versa. This breaks any attempt to reason only about global tree diameter without respecting the partition induced by the two chosen nodes.

The real difficulty is that each query induces a Voronoi partition on a tree, and we need the maximum distance inside this partition.

Approaches

The brute-force solution treats each query independently. From the two chosen centers u and v, we compute distances from u and from v to every other node using BFS or DFS. Each node contributes min(dist(u, x), dist(v, x)), and we take the maximum. This is correct but costs O(n) per query, so O(nm) overall, which is too large for 10^5 scale inputs.

The key structural observation is that the tree can be rooted arbitrarily and distances behave predictably along paths. For a fixed pair (u, v), every node x belongs to one of two regions depending on which center is closer. The boundary between these regions lies along the unique path between u and v. Away from this path, the assignment is determined purely by which side of the path the node’s projection lies on.

This suggests splitting the problem into two types of candidates. One type comes from nodes whose bottleneck is the separation between u and v itself, which behaves like a midpoint effect on the path. The other type comes from nodes deep inside a subtree attached to the u-side or v-side of the u-v path, where the farthest such node from its assigned center is determined by the maximum distance within that constrained side.

To support queries efficiently, we precompute lowest common ancestors and distances, and also maintain for each node information that allows us to retrieve the farthest node reachable in a subtree while avoiding a specific direction (the direction toward the other query node). This is done with a combination of DFS preprocessing and rerooting DP, so that each node can answer “farthest node in a given child direction” in logarithmic time.

With these tools, each query reduces to inspecting a small number of structural candidates derived from u, v, and the decomposition of the u-v path, instead of scanning the whole tree.

Algorithm Walkthrough

We preprocess the tree once so that we can compute distances and move upward quickly.

  1. Root the tree at an arbitrary node and run a DFS to compute parent pointers and depths. This allows lowest common ancestor queries and distance computations in logarithmic time.
  2. Build a binary lifting table for ancestors. This lets us jump upward in powers of two, which is necessary to move along paths efficiently when we need to avoid stepping into a forbidden subtree.
  3. Run a rerooting DFS to compute, for each node, the best distance to any node in its subtree. Along with this, we store enough information to reconstruct not just the value but also the direction in which that farthest node lies.

The reason this is needed is that when a query splits the tree along the path between u and v, we must sometimes ignore a particular child subtree. Having precomputed best-in-subtree information allows us to answer “best reachable node excluding this direction” efficiently. 4. For each query (u, v), compute their lowest common ancestor and the distance between them using standard LCA formulas. 5. Consider the path between u and v. Any node on this path may act as a boundary where assignment switches between the two centers. The contribution from this path is captured by the fact that no node can have a nearest-center distance exceeding half the distance between u and v along the path, up to rounding effects. 6. For each endpoint u and v, compute the best candidate farthest node that is not forced into the opposite side of the path. This is done by climbing from the endpoint toward the LCA and selecting the best subtree branch that does not lead toward the other endpoint. 7. The answer for the query is the maximum among the path-based midpoint effect and the best constrained subtree distances computed from both u and v.

Why it works

Every node either lies on the path between the two chosen centers or hangs off some vertex of that path in a subtree. If it lies on the path, its distance to the nearer center is controlled by its distance to the closer endpoint along that path, which is maximized near the middle. If it lies off the path, its nearest center is determined entirely by which side of the path its attachment point belongs to, so its distance is exactly a “farthest node in a subtree with a direction excluded” query.

The preprocessing guarantees that every such constrained subtree query can be answered without ambiguity, so every node is accounted for exactly once in the maximization.
