This is naturally handled using a divide-and-conquer over the column range, where each segment maintains a transition structure describing how entering from any endpoint cell leads to exits.
Each segment stores a constant-size state because there are only four boundary nodes: top-left, bottom-left, top-right, bottom-right. For each segment we compute shortest paths between these boundary states. This transforms each segment into a small “transfer matrix” that can be merged with another segment in constant time.

Algorithm Walkthrough
We index each column as a small 2-node vertical structure. Each node represents a cell, and edges exist horizontally if cells are free and vertically if the column allows it.

The cost from any boundary of A to any boundary of B is computed by trying all intermediate states at the boundary between them. 4. Store only the 4 boundary-to-boundary shortest path values per segment. This keeps the state constant-sized. 5. For each query, identify the columns of the two endpoints. If they are in different connected components (determined by segment structure), return -1. 6. Otherwise, query the segment tree over the range between the two columns, combining transition states and computing the best cost from the start cell state to the target cell state.
Why it works
The crucial invariant is that every segment tree node fully summarizes all possible shortest paths that enter or exit through its boundary cells. Any valid path between two points must cross segment boundaries in sequence, and at each boundary the algorithm preserves the exact best cost for all entry-exit combinations. Since every path can be decomposed into segment-level transitions, and each segment stores exact shortest distances between boundary states, the composed answer is globally optimal.
No approximation occurs because every possible intermediate configuration at segment boundaries is explicitly considered during merging.
