From the top of a hill, you can “see” another hill if the straight segment connecting their tops does not intersect any intermediate hill segments. Whenever two tops can see each other, we imagine an undirected rope connecting them, forming a graph over hill tops.
On this graph, climbers move deterministically. Each climber starts at a given hill. When it is their turn to move, they look only to the right. Among all hills reachable by a rope from their current position, they pick the rightmost one and jump there. However, if at some point both climbers of a pair will eventually end up at the same hill, then once a climber reaches a hill that lies on the other’s eventual route, they stop moving and wait.
For each pair of starting hills, we must determine the hill where both climbers meet when following this greedy “always go to the farthest reachable right neighbor” process.
The constraints are large, with up to 100,000 hills and 100,000 queries. This immediately rules out any per-query graph traversal over the full structure. Even building and storing all visibility edges explicitly is impossible because the graph is potentially dense, with O(n²) edges in the worst case.
The key difficulty is that movement is not arbitrary graph traversal. Each node has a deterministic “next choice”, and we are effectively following a directed structure induced by the visibility graph.
A few subtle edge cases matter.
If all hills have identical heights, every hill can see every other hill, so the “rightmost reachable” is always the last hill. Any pair should meet at the last hill.
If hills form a strictly increasing height sequence, visibility is also full to the right, and again everything collapses to the last node.
If hills alternate high and low, visibility becomes sparse, and naive assumptions like “you can always jump to i+1” fail completely.
A further pitfall is assuming visibility only depends on adjacent hills. That is incorrect because intermediate hills may block line-of-sight even if they are not directly between in index order in a simple local sense; we must respect geometric visibility.
Approaches
A brute-force interpretation builds the full visibility graph. For each pair of hills, we check whether the segment between their tops intersects any intermediate hill segment. That check is O(n), and doing it for all pairs gives O(n³), which is infeasible.
Even if we improve to O(n²) by precomputing visibility edges, each query still requires simulating two deterministic walks. Since each walk can take O(n) steps in the worst case, queries degrade to O(n³) overall.
The crucial observation is that the movement rule defines a functional graph. From each hill, there is exactly one “next” hill: the rightmost hill visible from it. Once we know this next pointer for every node, the entire process becomes jumping along a directed chain.
This reduces the problem to computing next pointers efficiently and then answering “where do two nodes first meet if both repeatedly follow next pointers, stopping when they converge?” This is equivalent to finding the first common node on two functional graph paths.
We compute the next array using a monotonic stack over hills ordered by position, maintaining a convex-like structure over heights. This is the classic “visibility to the right” optimization: for each hill, the next visible hill is the first one to the right that is not hidden by any intermediate hill. The geometry reduces to maintaining a decreasing slope condition.
Once next pointers are known, we can preprocess binary lifting ancestors for jumping in logarithmic time. Then each query becomes a standard “climb both nodes to the same depth and then jump upward together until they meet” problem in a functional tree structure.

Algorithm Walkthrough
We treat each hill as a node in a directed graph with exactly one outgoing edge to its “next visible hill to the right”.
- Sort is already given by x-coordinate, so we process hills from right to left.
This direction matters because visibility only depends on future hills. 2. Maintain a structure that keeps candidate hills for being visible from the current hill.
Each time we consider a hill i, we remove from the structure any hill that is hidden behind i when looking from the right.
The condition for visibility is determined by comparing slopes between points (x, y). If hill i blocks visibility to a further hill, that further hill is removed.
This ensures that only truly visible candidates remain. 3. The top of the maintained structure becomes the next visible hill for i.
This works because any hill that survives the stack is not blocked by any intermediate hill, so the rightmost surviving element is geometrically visible. 4. Store this as next[i]. If no hill exists, next[i] = null. 5. Build binary lifting table up[i][k], where up[i][0] = next[i], and higher powers represent repeated jumps.
This allows jumping 2^k steps along visibility chains in O(1). 6. To answer a query (a, b), first align both nodes by depth along their chains if needed, then repeatedly lift the deeper node until both are at the same position in the chain. 7. From there, lift both nodes simultaneously from highest power to lowest until they match.
The first node where they coincide is the meeting hill.
Why it works
The next-pointer construction turns the geometric visibility graph into a forest of directed chains where every node has exactly one successor. The stack guarantees that for each node, the chosen successor is the rightmost hill that is not geometrically blocked by any intermediate hill, so no later move can bypass it without violating visibility. Once this structure is fixed, any valid movement path is uniquely determined, and two independent traversals must eventually enter the same chain suffix. Binary lifting preserves reachability along this deterministic structure, so the first common ancestor in this functional graph is exactly the meeting point defined by the process.
