The driver can choose any path along the tramlines, but the engine house wants to install cameras at some crossroads so that if you check at regular intervals t, the tram is always caught on a camera.

Formally, we want the largest t such that there exists a subset of nodes with cameras where the tram will always pass through a camera every t minutes, starting from node 1. Among all maximal t, we pick the plan with the fewest cameras.

The input constraints allow up to 10^5 nodes and edges. That rules out anything worse than O(n + m) or O((n + m) log n) because O(n^2) would be 10^10 operations, far too slow. So the solution has to exploit graph structure rather than brute-force every path or interval.

A subtle edge case arises if the graph contains cycles of different lengths. For instance, consider a graph like 1 → 2 → 3 → 1 and 1 → 4 → 1. The cycles have lengths 3 and 2. Any camera interval t must divide all cycle lengths that are reachable from node 1. A careless approach might only check a single cycle and choose t based on it, producing the wrong maximum.

Another edge case is multiple parallel edges or self-loops. These don’t affect cycle lengths but need careful counting of cameras since only one camera per node is needed.

Approaches

A brute-force approach would try every possible interval t from 1 to the sum of all edge weights (here every edge implicitly takes 1 minute). For each t, simulate all possible paths and check if the tram always appears on a camera every t minutes. This is correct in theory but obviously infeasible: simulating all paths is exponential in the number of nodes.

The key insight comes from graph theory. The tram will repeatedly traverse cycles in the graph. The maximum t that guarantees the tram is always on a camera is the greatest common divisor (GCD) of all cycle lengths in the graph starting from node 1. Each node has a “distance modulo t” along any path; nodes that share the same remainder modulo t can share a camera. So the problem reduces to finding cycles, computing their lengths, taking the GCD, and then assigning cameras according to distance modulo t.

To implement this efficiently, we perform a DFS, track the depth of each node, and whenever we encounter a back edge (visiting an already-visited node not via parent), we compute the cycle length as the difference in depths plus 1. Then we compute the GCD of all cycle lengths. For camera placement, each node is labeled by its depth modulo GCD. One node per modulo class is sufficient for coverage. Node 1 must always have a camera, and it will naturally belong to some class.

Algorithm Walkthrough

  1. Build the adjacency list for the graph from input edges. This allows efficient traversal of outgoing edges from each node.

Why it works:

The DFS finds all cycles reachable from node 1, so we only consider cycles the tram could traverse. The GCD guarantees the largest uniform interval t that divides all cycle lengths. By labeling nodes modulo t, we cover every possible time step because in any path starting from node 1, the time at a node is congruent to its depth modulo t. Choosing one node per modulo class ensures complete coverage.
