Each paper describes an undirected edge between two cities. We are told that all papers came from exactly two travel journals. Inside one journal, the traveler wrote down the sequence of roads they traversed, and a road may appear multiple times because the traveler could reuse it.

The task is to split all given edges into two non-empty ordered sequences so that each sequence forms a valid walk in some graph. Consecutive edges in one sequence must share a city, because the traveler moves continuously from one road to the next.

Another way to phrase the problem is this: we are given a multigraph where every paper is an edge. We must partition all edges into two edge-disjoint trails.

The graph is not necessarily connected. Parallel edges are allowed. Self-loops are forbidden because the statement guarantees a != b.

The limit is only m <= 10000, so linear or near-linear graph algorithms are completely safe. An O(m^2) solution would already approach 10^8 operations in the worst case and become risky in Python. The structure of the problem strongly suggests Eulerian graph reasoning, because we are asked to arrange edges into trails that use every edge exactly once across two paths.

The dangerous part is that we are not constructing one Euler trail, but exactly two trails, both non-empty. A naive decomposition can accidentally produce more than two components, or consume all edges into a single trail.

Several edge cases are easy to mishandle.

Approaches

The brute-force perspective is straightforward. Every edge must belong to one of two ordered trails. We could try all partitions of edges into two groups, then check whether each group admits an Euler trail.

There are 2^m partitions. Even for m = 40, this becomes impossible. With m = 10000, brute force is completely hopeless.

A more graph-theoretic brute force improves the situation slightly. We could try selecting endpoints for the two trails, then construct Euler traversals. But each connected component can interact with the two paths in many ways, and the number of combinations still grows exponentially.

The breakthrough comes from looking at vertex parity.

A graph can be traversed by one Euler trail exactly when every connected component has either zero or two odd-degree vertices. More generally, if we want to cover all edges using k trails, then each trail contributes at most two odd endpoints. That means a connected component with 2t odd vertices requires at least t trails.

Since we are allowed exactly two trails total, every connected component must require at most two trails, and the sum across all components must also stay within two.

This transforms the problem from a search problem into a parity problem.

Suppose a component has:

  • 0 odd vertices. It already contains an Euler cycle and needs one trail.
  • 2 odd vertices. It already contains an Euler trail and needs one trail.
  • 4 odd vertices. It needs exactly two trails.
  • More than 4 odd vertices. Impossible.

Now consider multiple connected components. Every non-empty component needs at least one trail. Since we only have two trails globally, the graph can contain at most two "trail requirements".

This immediately suggests the full characterization.

After deciding feasibility, constructing the trails becomes an Euler traversal problem. We can artificially pair odd vertices with fake edges so every component becomes Eulerian, run Hierholzer's algorithm, then cut the traversal at fake edges to recover the required trails.

This is the standard trick behind Euler decomposition problems.

Algorithm Walkthrough

  1. Build the multigraph.

Each paper becomes one undirected edge with its input index preserved. We store adjacency lists because we later need Euler traversal. 2. Find connected components using DSU.

Components matter because Euler conditions are checked independently inside each connected component. 3. Count odd-degree vertices inside every component.

For a component with 2t odd vertices, at least t trails are necessary to cover all edges. 4. Compute how many trails are minimally required.

For each non-empty component:

  • if it has 0 odd vertices, it contributes 1
  • otherwise it contributes odd_count / 2

Sum these values across all components.

If the total is not exactly 2, we must adjust or reject. 5. Reject impossible cases.

If the minimum required number of trails exceeds 2, no solution exists.

If there is only one required trail and the graph has at least two edges, we can split an Euler cycle/trail into two non-empty parts later.

If the graph has only one edge, the answer is impossible because both paths must be non-empty. 6. Add fake edges to make all degrees even.

Inside every component, pair odd vertices arbitrarily and connect them with fake edges.

After this step, every component becomes Eulerian. 7. Run Hierholzer's algorithm.

Why it works

Pairing odd vertices with fake edges transforms each component into an Eulerian graph. Hierholzer's algorithm then produces a cycle using every real and fake edge exactly once.

Removing a fake edge breaks the Euler cycle into separate trails. Since each fake edge reduces the number of odd pairs by one, the decomposition produces the minimum possible number of trails for that component.

The total minimum number of trails over all components is exactly the lower bound imposed by parity. If that value exceeds two, no construction can succeed. Otherwise the decomposition gives either one or two trails, and a single trail can always be split into two non-empty parts as long as there are at least two edges.

Because every real edge appears exactly once in the Euler traversal and fake edges are discarded, every paper is used exactly once in the final answer.

The DSU section groups vertices into connected components because parity constraints are checked component-wise. A common mistake is to count odd vertices globally. Two separate components each with two odd vertices already require two trails independently.

The need computation encodes the minimum number of trails required. Components with all even degrees still need one trail because their edges must be traversed somehow.

The fake-edge construction is the critical transformation. Pairing odd vertices makes every degree even, allowing Euler cycles. Fake edges are assigned negative identifiers so they can later be recognized and removed.

Hierholzer's algorithm is implemented iteratively with a stack. This avoids recursion depth issues on large graphs with many repeated edges.

One subtle detail is edge handling in a multigraph. We cannot simply mark vertex pairs as used because parallel edges may exist. Each edge receives a unique internal ID.

After obtaining the Euler cycle, every fake edge acts as a separator between trails. Splitting on fake edges reconstructs the original decomposition.

The final special case handles graphs whose minimum requirement is one trail. Any Euler trail with at least two edges can be cut into two non-empty consecutive pieces, and each piece remains a valid trail.
