The coordinates are small, at most 3000, but the number of rectangles is very large. That immediately rules out algorithms that compare every subset or every pair of subsets. Even an $O(n^2)$ solution is already around $10^{10}$ operations in the worst case, which is far beyond what fits in 3 seconds.

The small coordinate range is the unusual part of the problem. While there are many rectangles, every coordinate lies in a $3001 \times 3001$ grid. This strongly suggests using dynamic programming or memoization over coordinate intervals rather than over rectangle subsets.

A subtle difficulty is that rectangles may touch only at borders. A naive flood-fill over cells can accidentally treat border-touching rectangles as disconnected. For example:

Another dangerous case is when the bounding box is a square but the interior contains holes.

The real challenge is detecting whether some collection of non-overlapping rectangles perfectly tiles a square, without explicitly enumerating subsets.

Approaches

The brute-force idea is straightforward. For every subset of rectangles, compute the union's bounding box and total area. If the bounding box is a square and the area matches the square's area, then verify that the rectangles completely tile that square without gaps or overlaps.

This works because the rectangles do not overlap, so union area is easy to compute. The problem is the number of subsets. With $n = 10^5$, even iterating all subsets is impossible. Trying all connected groups or all bounding boxes also explodes combinatorially.

The key observation is that any valid square can be recursively split by a full vertical or horizontal cut. Since rectangles do not overlap, if a square is tiled by rectangles, then either:

  1. It consists of a single rectangle which is already a square.
  2. There exists a vertical line splitting the square into two smaller tiled rectangles.
  3. There exists a horizontal line splitting the square into two smaller tiled rectangles.

This transforms the problem into interval dynamic programming on coordinate ranges.

Because coordinates are at most 3000, we can represent every possible axis-aligned rectangle region using coordinate indices. The total number of possible states is manageable if we only visit states that actually appear during recursion.

For a region $(x_1,y_1,x_2,y_2)$, define whether the union of input rectangles exactly covering this region can form a square. Since rectangles never overlap, every region either contains no rectangles, one rectangle, or can be partitioned cleanly along some coordinate where no rectangle crosses the cut.

The recursive structure resembles parsing or rectangle partition DP. Once we know how to split a region into smaller valid pieces, we can combine them.

The difficult part is making transitions efficient. Instead of scanning all rectangles every time, we preprocess rectangles by boundaries so we can quickly determine whether a clean vertical or horizontal cut exists.

  2. Build a map from every region to the rectangles fully contained inside it. Since coordinates are small, memoization over coordinate tuples becomes feasible.
  3. Define a recursive function solve(x1, y1, x2, y2).

If the area does not equal (x2 - x1) * (y2 - y1), the region cannot be fully tiled.

This is the base case. 6. Try every possible vertical cut mid between x1 and x2.

A cut is valid only if no rectangle crosses it. Every rectangle must lie entirely on the left or entirely on the right side. 7. If the cut is valid, recursively solve the left and right subregions.

If both succeed, combine their rectangle sets and return success. 8. If no vertical cut works, try every horizontal cut similarly. 9. Memoize every computed state.

Many recursive calls revisit the same regions, so memoization is essential. 10. Finally, test every square bounding region induced by rectangle coordinates.

As soon as one succeeds, output the corresponding rectangle indices.

Why it works

The recursion relies on a structural property of rectangle tilings. Any tiling of a rectangle by non-overlapping rectangles can be represented by recursively splitting along full vertical or horizontal cuts. If no such cut existed, every vertical and horizontal line would be crossed by some rectangle, which is impossible in a finite orthogonal subdivision.

The DP checks exactly these recursive decompositions. The area condition guarantees no holes. The non-crossing cut condition guarantees subproblems are independent. Since every successful decomposition corresponds to an exact partition of the region, the algorithm cannot accept an invalid square.

Conversely, every valid square tiling admits such a recursive decomposition, so the algorithm eventually finds it.

The recursive function operates on a list of rectangles representing one connected region candidate. The first thing it computes is the bounding box and total area. If the area does not match the bounding rectangle area, there must be a gap somewhere, so recursion stops immediately.

The memoization key uses the sorted rectangle indices. Two recursive branches may produce the same subset in different orders, and sorting normalizes them into one canonical state.

The cut validation is the critical implementation detail. A vertical cut at coordinate cut is legal only if no rectangle satisfies x1 < cut < x2. Such a rectangle would cross the cut and make the partition invalid.

The same logic applies horizontally.

The recursion terminates because every valid cut strictly decreases the number of rectangles in each subproblem.

One subtle point is the base case. If the current bounding box is already a square and fully covered by rectangles, we immediately accept the whole subset. We do not need to recurse further.
