We are given a target coordinate (x, y). Valera walks from (0, 0) along the spiral path until he reaches that point. Every time the spiral changes direction, he makes a turn. The task is to count how many turns happen before reaching the target point.

The coordinate bounds are tiny, only from -100 to 100. Even a direct simulation of the spiral is fast enough because the spiral reaches all such points after only a few hundred segments. There is no need for advanced geometry or heavy optimization. The challenge is recognizing the pattern correctly and handling the boundaries between spiral layers.

The tricky part is that points on different sides of the same square layer correspond to different numbers of turns. A careless implementation often gets the corners wrong because a corner belongs to the segment that arrives there, not the segment that leaves it.

Approaches

The most direct approach is to literally generate the spiral. Start at (0,0), move one unit at a time, and rotate directions whenever the current segment length is exhausted. While walking, count how many direction changes have happened. As soon as the current coordinate matches the target point, return the counter.

This works because the constraints are extremely small. Even if we generate the spiral until coordinates reach magnitude 100, we only walk a few tens of thousands of steps. That is comfortably inside the time limit.

Still, the problem has a very regular structure, and there is a cleaner observation. Every “ring” of the spiral corresponds to a square centered at the origin. The number of turns depends only on which side of the current square contains the point.

For a point on the right side of layer k, the spiral has already completed 4k turns before entering that side. Moving around the square increases the count in order: right side, top side, left side, bottom side.

Instead of simulating every movement, we can classify the point geometrically.

Suppose m = max(|x|, |y|). Then the point lies on the square layer with radius m.

The spiral reaches the four sides of this layer in this order:

  1. right side x = m
  2. top side y = m
  3. left side x = -m
  4. bottom side y = -m

Each transition adds one more turn.

The implementation follows the geometric classification directly.

The first special case handles the origin. Without it, the later formulas would incorrectly classify (0,0) as part of the right side and produce 0 only by accident. Explicit handling keeps the logic clean.

The value m identifies the outer square containing the point. For example, (2,-1) belongs to layer 2 because the farthest coordinate magnitude is 2.

The order of the conditions matters. Corners belong to two sides simultaneously, so we must match the side reached first by the spiral.

For example, (2,2) satisfies both x == m and y == m. The spiral reaches it while moving upward, not while moving right, so it should use the top-side formula. The condition:
