The graph has maximum degree 3. That restriction is the entire reason the problem is solvable. In a general graph, this kind of local coloring constraint becomes much harder, but with degree at most 3 the structure is heavily constrained.

The number of vertices can be up to around $10^5$, and the same is true for edges. A solution that tries all $2^n$ colorings is immediately impossible. Even $2^{40}$ is already far beyond practical limits. With a 2 second time limit, we should expect something close to linear time, or at worst $O(n \log n)$.

The condition "at most one same-colored neighbor" has an interesting interpretation. A vertex of degree 0 or 1 is always safe. A vertex of degree 2 fails only if both neighbors share its color. A vertex of degree 3 fails only if at least two neighbors share its color.

Several edge cases are easy to mishandle.

A standard bipartite coloring fails because odd cycles are not bipartite. But this problem does not require enemies to always be separated. We only need each vertex to have at most one enemy in the same party. The coloring 100 is valid because every vertex has exactly one same-colored neighbor at most.

Another dangerous case is a complete graph on 4 vertices.

Every vertex has degree 3. Any partition into two groups forces one side to contain at least two vertices, which creates multiple same-colored neighbors for someone. The correct output is -1.

A careless greedy coloring can also fail even when a valid answer exists. Suppose we color vertices one by one and always choose the first legal color locally. Later vertices may become impossible to assign even though another earlier choice would have worked.

The key challenge is that the constraint is local but dependencies propagate through the graph.

Approaches

The brute-force idea is straightforward. Try every binary coloring of the graph. For each coloring, scan every vertex and count how many neighbors share its color. If every count is at most one, we found a valid partition.

This is correct because it checks all possible assignments. The problem is the running time. There are $2^n$ colorings. Even for $n = 50$, this is already hopeless. With $n$ around $10^5$, exhaustive search is completely impossible.

So we need to exploit the degree bound.

The key observation is that every vertex has degree at most 3. If a vertex has degree 3, then among its three neighbors, at least two must differ from it. Another way to phrase this is that each degree-3 vertex behaves almost like a bipartite constraint.

A more useful reformulation appears if we think in terms of "bad" edges. An edge is bad if both endpoints get the same color. Every vertex may participate in at most one bad edge.

That means the bad edges form a matching. Once we choose which edges are bad, every remaining edge must connect opposite colors, so the graph becomes bipartite after removing the matching.

Now the problem becomes:

Can we remove a matching so that the remaining graph is bipartite?

This is the crucial structural insight.

Since the graph degree is at most 3, every connected component is sparse. More importantly, every odd cycle must contribute at least one removed edge. If two odd cycles are edge-disjoint and force conflicting choices, the answer may not exist.

The elegant solution uses DFS with parity constraints. We attempt a standard bipartite coloring. Whenever we encounter an edge connecting equal colors, that edge belongs to an odd cycle. We "consume" one allowance from both endpoints by declaring this edge bad.

Each vertex may be used by at most one bad edge. If some vertex would need to participate in two bad edges, the construction fails.

This works because degree at most 3 guarantees that conflicts can be resolved locally. The resulting algorithm runs in linear time.

Algorithm Walkthrough

  1. Build the adjacency list of the graph.

We need efficient traversal of neighbors during DFS. 2. Maintain an array color initialized to -1.

A value of 0 or 1 represents the assigned party. 3. Maintain another array used_bad.

used_bad[v] = 1 means vertex v already participates in a same-colored edge. 4. Start DFS from every unvisited vertex.

The graph may be disconnected. 5. During DFS, try to assign alternating colors exactly like bipartite coloring.

If we move through edge (u,v) and v is uncolored, assign color[v] = color[u] ^ 1. 6. If we encounter an already colored neighbor:

If color[v] != color[u], the edge is fine and nothing is needed.

If color[v] == color[u], then this edge would violate bipartiteness. We declare this edge to be a bad edge. 7. Before accepting (u,v) as a bad edge, check whether either endpoint already participates in another bad edge.

If used_bad[u] or used_bad[v] is already true, then this vertex would have at least two same-colored neighbors. The answer is impossible. 8. Otherwise mark both endpoints as used:

Any same-colored edge corresponds to one explicitly accepted bad edge, and each vertex belongs to at most one such edge.

Why it works

The DFS maintains a nearly bipartite coloring. Every edge either connects opposite colors or is explicitly designated as a bad edge.

Whenever we accept a bad edge, both endpoints spend their single allowance for having a same-colored neighbor. Since we never allow a vertex to participate in two bad edges, every vertex ends with at most one same-colored adjacent vertex.

If the algorithm rejects, some vertex would necessarily need two bad edges. That means no valid partition exists, because each bad edge corresponds exactly to one same-colored neighbor relationship.

The graph is stored as an adjacency list because the graph is sparse. With degree at most 3, adjacency lists are optimal.

The color array stores the current partition assignment. We initialize every vertex with -1 to indicate it has not been visited yet.

The DFS is almost identical to standard bipartite checking. The difference appears when we encounter an edge connecting two vertices of the same color.

In a normal bipartite test, such an edge immediately means failure. Here we allow exactly one such edge per vertex. The used_bad array tracks whether a vertex has already consumed that allowance.

The condition v != parent avoids treating the DFS tree edge as a back-edge in the undirected graph.

One subtle point is that an odd cycle produces exactly one same-colored edge during DFS traversal. That is enough to break the cycle and restore consistency.

Another subtle issue is recursion depth. Even though maximum degree is small, the graph can still form a long chain. Increasing the recursion limit avoids crashes on deep DFS trees.
