The task is to count how many assignments of directions to the n bars satisfy this reachability condition. Since each bar has four possible directions, the total number of raw configurations is 4^n, so brute force is immediately suspicious.

The bounds are the real clue. n can be as large as 1000, while h is at most 30. A state depending on the last h bars is realistic because 2^30 or 4^30 is impossible, but something polynomial in n and exponential only in h may fit. A quadratic DP over n is completely safe, and even a few million transitions are fine in Python under a 4 second limit.

The difficult part is understanding what actually determines reachability. A naive interpretation might try to simulate graph connectivity for every coloring, but that misses the structural property hidden in the movement rule.

A few edge cases are easy to mishandle.

Consider:

The answer is 4. Every single bar is reachable directly from the ground, and that bar is also in the top segment.

Another tricky case:

Movement is only possible between bars at exactly the same height difference 1, because larger jumps are forbidden. Reachability becomes equivalent to having a continuous chain of equal directions from height 1 upward. Since the child only starts on height 1, all bars must share the same direction. The correct answer is 4.

A more subtle situation:

A configuration like 123333 fails even though the last four bars all have the same direction. The problem is that the reachable region from the ground never connects into that block. Reachability is global, not local.

A careless DP that only tracks the last color or the current connected component size will silently fail on such examples.

Approaches

The brute force solution is straightforward. Generate all 4^n direction assignments, build the movement graph, run BFS from the ground-accessible bars, and check whether any top bar is reachable.

This works because the movement condition directly defines an undirected graph. Two bars connect if they share a direction and their height difference does not exceed h.

The problem is the scale. With n = 1000, the number of configurations is roughly 10^602. Even for n = 30, brute force is already hopeless.

The key observation is that connectivity depends only on occurrences of the same direction within distance h.

Fix one direction, say direction 1. Look at all heights where this direction appears. The child can move along those heights if consecutive occurrences differ by at most h. The same logic applies independently to every direction.

Now think about what makes the entire construction invalid. The child starts somewhere in [1, h] and must eventually reach [n-h+1, n]. Failure means that every direction has a “gap” larger than h somewhere in the middle. Once such a gap exists, movement through that direction cannot cross it.

This converts the problem into a covering problem over intervals.

For each direction, define its maximal reachable prefix. Initially, a direction is reachable if it appears in the first h bars. Every further occurrence within distance h extends reachability upward. The process dies when a gap larger than h appears.

The optimal DP tracks, for every direction, the last occurrence position. Since h ≤ 30, only relative distances up to h matter. Larger gaps are equivalent.

The crucial compression is this: instead of remembering exact histories, we only care which directions are still “alive” for reachability and how far ago they last appeared.

This leads to a state space of size roughly (h+1)^4, which is manageable because h ≤ 30.

Algorithm Walkthrough

  1. For every direction, store the distance since its most recent occurrence.

If a direction has not appeared for more than h levels, then it can no longer continue a reachable path upward. 2. Initialize the DP with all four directions marked as “inactive”.

Before placing any bars, no direction has appeared yet. 3. Process heights from 1 to n.

At each level, try placing one of the four directions. 4. When placing direction c, reset its distance to 0.

That direction now appears at the current height. 5. Increase the stored distance for every other direction by 1, capping values at h+1.

Distances larger than h all behave the same way, because movement across such a gap is impossible. 6. Track whether a direction is reachable from the ground.

A direction becomes reachable if it appears within the first h levels. Later occurrences remain reachable only if consecutive appearances stay within distance h. 7. After processing all n bars, check whether at least one reachable direction appears within the last h heights.

Such a direction gives a valid path into the top segment. 8. Sum all valid DP states modulo 10^9 + 9.

Why it works

For a fixed direction, movement is possible exactly along chains of occurrences whose consecutive gaps are at most h. The DP state preserves enough information to determine whether adding a new occurrence continues such a chain or starts an unreachable fragment.

Because movement between different directions is impossible, the four directions behave independently except for the choice made at each height. A configuration is valid precisely when at least one direction forms a continuous reachable chain from the bottom window to the top window.

The DP enumerates every possible coloring once and correctly classifies whether such a chain exists.

The DP state stores two pieces of information.

The first component is the distance since the last occurrence of each direction. Distances larger than h are collapsed into h+1 because once a gap exceeds h, connectivity is permanently broken across that gap.

The second component is a bitmask describing which directions are still reachable from the ground. A direction becomes reachable if it appears in the first h heights. Later, if the gap between consecutive appearances exceeds h, that direction loses reachability forever.

The transition step simulates placing one more bar. The chosen direction resets its distance to 0, while every other direction grows older by one level.

The final condition checks whether some reachable direction appeared within the last h levels. If yes, the child can reach one of the top bars.

One subtle point is the comparison dist[c] < h in the final check. Distances count how many levels ago the direction appeared. A value strictly smaller than h means the last occurrence lies inside the top window.

Another easy mistake is forgetting that directions can permanently lose reachability after a large gap. The DP explicitly removes the corresponding bit from the mask when dist[c] > h.
