Problem Understanding

Each employee follows a rigid repeating schedule. Once hired on day x, the employee works for n consecutive days, then rests for m consecutive days, then repeats forever. So the cycle length is n + m, and inside each cycle the employee is active for the first n days.

The store must satisfy two conditions forever, starting from day 1.

First, at least k employees must be working every day.

Second, the store key must always stay inside the connected group of currently working employees. The key starts with the first employee on his first working day. An employee can hand the key to another employee only on a day when both work simultaneously. If at some point all currently working employees are disconnected from future employees, the key gets trapped and the store eventually stops functioning.

We need to minimize the total number of employees and output hiring days that achieve this minimum.

The constraints are small enough to allow reasoning about one whole cycle. Since every employee repeats every n + m days, the entire system is periodic. With n, m ≤ 1000, algorithms around O((n+m)^2) are completely fine, while anything exponential or involving large state search is unnecessary.

The difficult part is not covering every day with at least k workers. That alone is easy. The subtle requirement is keeping the key transferable forever.

Consider n = 2, m = 2, k = 1.

If we hire one employee on day 1 and another on day 3, coverage works:

  • Employee A works days 1,2,5,6,...
  • Employee B works days 3,4,7,8,...

Every day has one worker, but the key cannot move from A to B because they never overlap. The store dies after day 2.

A careless solution that only checks daily coverage would incorrectly claim two employees are enough.

Another tricky case is when workers barely overlap.

n = 4, m = 3, k = 1

Hiring employees on days 1 and 4 works:

  • Employee 1 works 1..4
  • Employee 2 works 4..7

They overlap on day 4, so the key can move forward forever.

The overlap graph must stay connected through time.

One more subtlety is that schedules are cyclic modulo n + m. Two employees hired on equivalent days behave identically forever. The actual absolute hiring day matters only up to this cycle length.

Approaches

A brute-force mindset starts by viewing each possible hiring day modulo n + m as a type of employee. There are at most 2000 such types. We could try every subset and check whether:

  1. every day is covered by at least k employees,
  2. the overlap graph is connected enough to transfer the key forever.

Checking a single subset is manageable, but the number of subsets is exponential. Even for cycle length 20, this already becomes infeasible.

The next observation changes the problem completely.

An employee hired on day x works on cyclic interval:

[x, x+n-1] modulo (n+m)

To keep the key alive forever, the active employees must form a chain of overlapping intervals around the entire cycle. Since m ≤ n, consecutive hiring days differ by at most n-1 if we want overlap.

Now think about the minimum number of employees needed for k = 1.

Each employee covers n days out of n+m. To cover the whole cycle continuously with overlap, the optimal construction is to place employees exactly n-1 days apart. Every new employee starts on the last working day of the previous one, creating a single overlap day that passes the key forward.

How many such employees are needed?

Each additional employee contributes only n-1 new days because one day is spent overlapping with the previous worker. Covering a cycle of length n+m needs:

So:

For general k, we can simply duplicate this structure k times. The copies may coincide on the same hiring days. Each copy independently maintains key connectivity, and together they provide exactly k workers every day.

The beautiful part is that this is also optimal. Any connected cyclic cover for one layer can expose at most n-1 new days per employee because adjacent workers must overlap at least one day. That lower bound matches the construction.

Algorithm Walkthrough

  1. Compute the minimum number of employees required for one connected layer.

We need enough overlapping intervals to wrap around the entire cycle. Since every consecutive pair must overlap by at least one day, each new employee contributes at most n-1 fresh days.

So:

Why it works

Inside one layer, consecutive workers overlap because their starting days differ by n-1. Since each worker works for n consecutive days, they share exactly one day. The key can move along this chain forever.

The cycle closes because the total covered length reaches at least n+m, so the last worker also overlaps the first worker modulo the cycle.

The construction covers every day continuously. Duplicating the layer k times multiplies the number of active workers on every day by k, so the staffing requirement is satisfied.

Optimality comes from the overlap requirement. In any valid connected arrangement, each additional employee can contribute at most n-1 new cyclic days. Covering n+m cyclic days needs at least:

The computation of t uses ceiling division:

(n + m + (n - 2)) // (n - 1)

because:

The hiring days are generated using spacing n-1. This guarantees adjacent employees overlap by one day.

The same pattern is repeated k times. Reusing identical hiring days is completely legal because employees are independent people with identical schedules.

One subtle implementation detail is that n ≠ 1 is guaranteed by the statement, so division by n-1 is always safe.

Another easy mistake is trying to distribute copies differently for different layers. That is unnecessary. Exact duplication already achieves optimal staffing.
