The key structural insight is that the first time a student is served depends only on how many times they get “blocked” by higher priority people ahead of them, and this interaction can be precomputed using a monotonic structure. Instead of simulating full queue reordering, we track only the evolution of the first-serving time for each student.
We reinterpret the process from a forward perspective: each student eventually moves toward the front in a way that is governed by a monotone stack behavior based on priority. The queue never needs to be explicitly reconstructed; we only need to know when each student becomes reachable at the front for a serving event.
This leads to a solution that builds a dominance structure over priorities, using a stack-like sweep to simulate how higher-priority individuals “shield” those behind them. Combined with a binary search on time or direct event scheduling using a priority queue of next-available times, we can determine each student’s first service time efficiently.

Algorithm Walkthrough
- First, we model each student as an object containing its priority, service time, and position. We also track when each student will next become available if served.
- We maintain a structure representing the current queue front candidates, but instead of explicitly simulating the full queue, we simulate only “who is next to be served” using a priority-aware structure. - We then schedule their return at time t + s_i. When inserting them back, instead of scanning the queue, we rely on a second structure: a monotonic deque or balanced ordering by priority that ensures correct placement relative to existing active students.
- If multiple students return at the same time, we process them in increasing order of s_i. This ensures deterministic insertion order consistent with the problem statement.
- We repeat this process until time exceeds D or all first-service times are known. If any student is still unserved after D minutes, we return -1.
Why it works
The critical invariant is that at any moment, the simulated structure preserves the exact relative ordering of active students that would appear in the real queue, without explicitly storing all intermediate rearrangements.
