The constraints completely shape the solution. A brute force over all subsets of size n-k is impossible. Even for n = 1000 and k = 30, the number of subsets is astronomically large. We need to exploit the fact that k is small.

The small value of k suggests that the optimal solution differs from the full set by only a few deleted points. This often leads to branching or bounded search techniques.

A key observation is that if the current set has diameter determined by two points u and v, then any valid solution with smaller diameter must delete at least one of u or v. Otherwise both remain, and the diameter cannot decrease.

That gives us a recursive branching process with branching factor 2 and depth at most k.

Several edge cases are easy to mishandle.

Suppose many points coincide.

The correct answer is deleting point 4, because then the diameter becomes zero. A careless implementation using floating point comparisons may incorrectly treat coincident points as distinct because of precision noise.

Another subtle case is when multiple pairs share the same maximum distance.

The diameter is achieved by several pairs. Deleting a point from one pair does not automatically reduce the diameter if another diameter pair survives. The recursive argument still works because every solution with smaller diameter must hit every maximum-distance pair, and recursively branching on one such pair eventually forces enough deletions.

A final edge case is when the optimal remaining set has only one point.

Any single remaining point has diameter zero. The implementation must correctly handle sets of size 1, where no pair exists.

Approaches

The brute force idea is straightforward. Enumerate every subset of size n-k, compute its diameter, and keep the best one.

Computing the diameter of one subset requires checking all pairs inside it, which costs O(n^2). The number of subsets is:

The brute force is correct because it explicitly checks every possible remaining set, but it fails immediately because the search space is enormous.

The key observation is structural rather than combinatorial.

Take the current set of active points. Let (u,v) be a pair achieving the current diameter. If we want the final diameter to become strictly smaller, then at least one of u or v must be deleted.

That creates a branching process:

If the current diameter is already at most the target value D, we are done.

Otherwise we find one violating pair (u,v) whose distance exceeds D. Any valid solution must delete either u or v. So we recursively try both possibilities.

Since each recursive step deletes one point, the recursion depth is at most k. The search tree has at most 2^k leaves. With k ≤ 30, this is large but still manageable with aggressive pruning.

Now we still need the optimal diameter, not merely feasibility for a fixed D.

Distances between points come from actual point pairs. There are only O(n^2) distinct squared distances. We can binary search over these candidate values.

For a fixed diameter bound D, we ask:

Can we delete at most k points so that every remaining pair has distance at most D?

This becomes a bounded branching problem on a graph:

Vertices are points.

Edges connect pairs farther than D.

We need to delete at most k vertices so that no edge remains. That is exactly the vertex cover problem.

In general vertex cover is NP-hard, but here the parameter k is tiny. The standard branching algorithm works perfectly.

The recursive rule is:

Pick any edge (u,v). Any valid vertex cover must include u or v. Recurse on both choices.

This gives complexity roughly O(2^k * n^2) per feasibility check.

Since there are only O(n^2) candidate distances, binary search adds another logarithmic factor.

Algorithm Walkthrough

  1. Read all points and precompute squared distances between every pair of points.

Using squared distances avoids floating point arithmetic and preserves all comparisons correctly. 2. Collect all distinct squared distances into a sorted array.

The optimal diameter must equal one of these values because the diameter is always determined by some pair of remaining points. 3. Binary search over the sorted candidate distances.

For each candidate D, we check whether it is possible to delete at most k points so that every remaining pair has squared distance at most D. 4. Build the implicit conflict graph for the current D.

Two points are connected if their squared distance exceeds D. Any valid remaining set cannot keep both endpoints of such an edge. 5. Run a recursive bounded vertex cover search.

If no conflict edge remains, the current deletions already satisfy the diameter constraint.

Otherwise choose any conflict edge (u,v). 6. Branch into two possibilities.

In the first branch, delete u.

In the second branch, delete v.

Any valid solution must choose at least one endpoint of every remaining conflict edge. 7. Stop recursion if more than k deletions are used.

That branch cannot produce a valid solution. 8. If the feasibility check succeeds, binary search moves left toward smaller diameters.

Otherwise it moves right. 9. After finding the minimum feasible diameter, output any set of exactly k deleted points.

The recursive search gives one valid deletion set of size at most k. If fewer than k points were needed, we can arbitrarily add extra undeleted points because removing more points never increases diameter.

Why it works

For a fixed diameter bound D, every pair farther than D cannot simultaneously remain. Representing such pairs as graph edges transforms the problem into finding a vertex cover of size at most k.

The recursive branching is correct because every edge must have at least one endpoint deleted. When the algorithm branches on (u,v), every valid solution belongs to one of the two branches.

Binary search is correct because feasibility is monotonic. If some diameter D is achievable, then any larger diameter is also achievable.

Since the optimal diameter must equal one of the pairwise distances, searching among those values guarantees we find the exact optimum.

The first section computes all pairwise squared distances. Using squared distances is essential because floating point square roots introduce unnecessary precision problems while giving no benefit.

The binary search operates on sorted distinct distances instead of arbitrary numeric values. That matters because the optimum diameter must be one of those exact pairwise distances.

The recursive feasibility check implements bounded vertex cover. The search always picks one conflict edge and branches on its endpoints.

A subtle implementation detail is that the recursion mutates shared arrays. Every recursive branch must undo its changes before returning. Forgetting to restore deleted[u] or chosen causes cross-branch contamination and produces incorrect answers.

Another important detail is that the recursion returns immediately once a valid branch succeeds. Without that pruning, the search tree would become dramatically larger.

The final output may contain fewer than k deleted points from the recursive process. That is valid because the feasibility check asks for at most k deletions. We extend the deletion set arbitrarily until it has exactly k points.
