Problem Understanding
We are given an n × m grid where some cells are painted with # and the others are empty .. The picture is supposed to come from painting exactly two rectangular frames.
A frame is not a filled rectangle. Only the border cells of the rectangle are painted. The inside stays empty unless another frame covers it. Every valid rectangle must have height at least 3 and width at least 3.
The two frames may overlap in any possible way. They may partially intersect, share edges, or even be exactly the same rectangle. After both frames are painted, we only see the final union of painted cells. The task is to determine whether the given picture can be represented as the union of exactly two valid frames. If yes, we also need to output one pair of rectangles that produces it.
The grid dimensions go up to 1000 × 1000, so the board may contain one million cells. Any algorithm that tries all possible rectangles explicitly is immediately in danger. A rectangle is determined by four borders, so there are O(n²m²) possible rectangles. Even iterating over all rectangles once is already around 10^12 possibilities in the worst case, which is completely impossible within two seconds.
The difficult part is not recognizing one frame, but handling arbitrary overlaps between two of them. A naive greedy approach can silently fail because one frame may hide large parts of the other.
One subtle edge case is complete coincidence. Both frames may be identical.

This can be represented as two identical frames. If we greedily remove one detected rectangle and expect leftover cells to reveal the second one, we may wrongly conclude there is only one frame.
The structure of the problem suggests that brute force over all rectangle pairs is hopeless. We need to exploit the geometry of frames much more carefully.
Approaches
The most direct brute force approach is to enumerate every possible rectangle, generate its frame cells, and then try every pair of rectangles. For each pair we compare the union of their frame cells against the input grid.
A valid rectangle needs two row indices and two column indices, so there are O(n²m²) candidate rectangles. Pairing them gives O(n⁴m⁴) combinations. Even before checking cells, this is astronomically large.
The brute force works conceptually because the condition is easy to verify. Given two rectangles, we can reconstruct exactly which cells should be painted. The problem is purely the number of possibilities.
The key observation is that a frame is completely determined by its outer boundary. If we know the top-left corner and bottom-right corner, we know every painted border cell immediately.
The second observation is more powerful. Since there are only two frames, every painted cell belongs to at least one of them. Suppose we choose one painted cell and assume it belongs to the first frame. That cell severely restricts the possible rectangle boundaries.
For a cell (x, y) to lie on a frame border, one of four things must happen:
- It lies on the top border.
- It lies on the bottom border.
- It lies on the left border.
- It lies on the right border.
Once one side is fixed, the opposite side and the remaining coordinates become constrained by contiguous painted segments.
The intended solution uses aggressive pruning and validation. Instead of enumerating all rectangles, we generate only rectangles that could plausibly pass through a chosen painted cell. The number of such candidates stays manageable.
For each candidate first frame, we subtract its border contribution from the grid and check whether the remaining painted cells form exactly one valid frame. Since frame validation can be done in linear time with prefix sums, the total complexity becomes feasible.

Algorithm Walkthrough
- Read the grid and store all painted cells.
- Build a prefix sum array over painted cells. This allows us to query the number of
#cells inside any rectangle in constant time. - Define a function that checks whether a rectangle is a valid frame in the current grid state.
The rectangle must satisfy:
- height at least
3 - width at least
3 - every border cell is painted
- every strictly interior cell is empty
Using prefix sums, we can count painted cells in any region instantly. 4. Enumerate candidate rectangles for the first frame.
We only consider rectangles whose four corner cells are painted. Any valid frame must paint all four corners. 5. For each candidate rectangle:
- Verify that it really forms a valid frame.
- Temporarily remove its border contribution from the grid.
- Find all remaining painted cells.
- Check whether the remaining pattern is either:
- empty, meaning both frames were identical
- exactly one valid frame
- To reconstruct the second frame, take the bounding box of all remaining painted cells.
If those cells form a frame exactly matching that bounding box, we found a valid decomposition.
7. If any candidate succeeds, print YES and both rectangles.
8. If all candidates fail, print NO.
Why it works:
Every valid solution contains some first rectangle. When we enumerate all rectangles whose corners are painted and whose borders match the frame definition, we eventually try that exact rectangle.
After removing one frame, the remaining painted cells must come entirely from the second frame. A frame's painted cells uniquely determine its bounding box because all four borders are painted. If the leftover cells do not exactly match the frame of their bounding box, then they cannot come from a single valid rectangle.
The algorithm never accepts an invalid configuration because both frames are explicitly verified against the frame definition.

The first part builds a two-dimensional prefix sum array. This allows constant-time queries for how many painted cells exist inside any rectangle. Without this preprocessing, checking every candidate frame would require scanning the whole rectangle repeatedly.
The is_frame function is the core geometric validator. A valid frame has exactly the number of border cells expected from its dimensions. If the total number of painted cells inside the rectangle differs from that count, something extra or missing exists. The second check guarantees the interior is completely empty.
The main loop enumerates candidate rectangles using pairs of painted cells as opposite corners. Corner validation is essential because every frame paints all four corners.
After choosing a candidate first frame, we remove only its border cells conceptually. We never mutate the grid itself. Instead, we filter the painted-cell list.
The leftover cells must form one exact frame. The bounding box reconstruction works because a frame necessarily touches all four extremes of its painted area. If the remaining cells differ from the border set of that box, the decomposition is impossible.
One subtle implementation detail is the border test:
(i == x1 or i == x2) and y1 <= j <= y2
This correctly handles horizontal borders, while the vertical-border condition handles the other sides. Using only corner checks would miss many border cells.
Another important detail is the handling of identical frames. If removing one frame leaves no cells at all, we accept by outputting the same rectangle twice.
