Problem Understanding

We are given a tree with n junctions and n - 1 roads. Every road has an integer beauty value. We must choose two junctions so that the path between them contains between l and r edges inclusive.

Among all such paths, we want the one whose median edge beauty is as large as possible.

The median definition is slightly unusual for even lengths. If a path has k edges and we sort the edge beauties, the answer is the element at index ⌊k / 2⌋ using zero-based indexing. For example:

  • length 3 uses the second-smallest value
  • length 4 uses the third-smallest value

That means the median is actually the upper median.

The input is a weighted tree, not a general graph. Between any two junctions there is exactly one simple path. The output only asks for any optimal pair of endpoints.

The constraints completely determine the direction of the solution. We have up to 10^5 nodes, so the number of paths is quadratic. Enumerating all pairs already costs around 10^10 operations, far beyond the limit. Even an O(n^2) algorithm with tiny constants would fail.

The edge weights are as large as 10^9, which usually hints that we should not DP directly on values. Instead, we should binary search on the answer.

The time limit is generous at 7 seconds, but this is still a 3000-rated tree problem. Realistically, we need something around O(n log^2 n) or O(n log n).

Several edge cases are easy to mishandle.

Consider a path of even length:

1 -2- 2 -100- 3

with l = r = 2.

The sorted beauties are [2, 100]. The required median is 100, not 2. A careless implementation using the lower median would reject the correct answer.

Another dangerous case is when the valid path must pass through a centroid boundary.

1 -10- 2 -1- 3 -10- 4

with l = r = 3.

The optimal path is 1 -> 4. If we only search inside each subtree independently and never combine them through a centroid, we miss the answer entirely.

A third subtle case is when all edge values are equal:

1 -5- 2 -5- 3 -5- 4

Every valid path has the same median. The algorithm must still return some valid endpoints instead of assuming uniqueness.

Finally, paths exactly at the boundaries matter:

1 -7- 2 -1- 3 -9- 4

with l = 2, r = 3.

A solution that accidentally checks only lengths < r instead of <= r will reject the path of length 3.

Approaches

The brute force idea is straightforward. Since the graph is a tree, every pair of vertices defines exactly one path. We can enumerate all O(n^2) pairs, recover the edge weights on the path, sort them, compute the median, and keep the best valid one.

This is correct because it literally checks every candidate. Unfortunately it is hopelessly slow. There are about 5 * 10^9 pairs when n = 10^5. Even computing a single path is expensive, so this approach is nowhere close.

We need to exploit the structure of the median condition.

Suppose we guess some value x and ask:

"Does there exist a valid path whose median is at least x?"

This transforms the problem completely.

Replace every edge weight:

  • +1 if w >= x
  • -1 otherwise

Now consider a path of length k.

For the upper median to be at least x, at least half of the edges rounded upward must satisfy w >= x. Equivalently:

count(good) >= count(bad)

After the transformation, the path sum becomes:

count(good) - count(bad)

So the condition is simply:

path sum >= 0

Now the problem becomes:

"Is there a path of length in [l, r] whose transformed sum is nonnegative?"

That is a much more standard optimization problem.

The tree structure suggests centroid decomposition. Any path either lies fully inside one subtree or passes through the centroid. During centroid processing, we collect all downward paths from the centroid and combine paths from different subtrees while respecting the length constraints.

The remaining challenge is efficiently checking whether two paths can combine into a nonnegative total sum. We process lengths and maintain the best path sum for every depth encountered so far.

This gives a decision procedure in O(n log n) for one fixed x.

Since the true answer is one of the edge weights, we binary search over the distinct edge beauties.

Algorithm Walkthrough

  1. Binary search on the median value.

Let x be the current candidate median. We want to determine whether there exists a valid path whose median is at least x. 2. Convert edge weights into +1 and -1.

For every edge:

+1 if weight >= x
-1 otherwise

A path has median at least x exactly when the transformed sum along the path is nonnegative. 3. Use centroid decomposition on the tree.

Every path in a tree either:

  • passes through the current centroid
  • lies completely inside one child subtree

The recursive decomposition guarantees every path is considered once. 4. For the current centroid, enumerate all downward paths into each child subtree.

For every node reachable from the centroid, record:

  • depth
  • transformed path sum
  • endpoint vertex

These represent all paths starting at the centroid and ending inside one subtree. 5. Combine paths from different subtrees.

Suppose one path has:

depth = d1
sum = s1

and another has:

depth = d2
sum = s2

The combined path through the centroid has:

length = d1 + d2
total sum = s1 + s2

We need:

l <= d1 + d2 <= r
s1 + s2 >= 0
  1. Maintain the best previously processed path for every depth.

While iterating through subtrees one by one, we store the maximum sum seen for each depth from earlier subtrees.

This prevents combining two paths from the same subtree, which would produce an invalid path not passing through the centroid. 7. Use a segment tree to query the maximum available sum in a depth range.

For a current path of depth d, the partner depth must lie in:

[l - d, r - d]

We query the maximum stored sum in that range. If:

best + current_sum >= 0

Why it works

The key invariant is the transformed path sum interpretation.

For any path, define:

sum = (#edges with weight >= x) - (#edges with weight < x)

The upper median is at least x exactly when this quantity is nonnegative.

Centroid decomposition guarantees every tree path is processed at exactly one centroid where the path crosses between different centroid-subtrees or touches the centroid itself. During processing, the data structure always stores the best path sums from already processed subtrees only, so every combined pair represents a valid simple path.

The segment tree ensures we only combine depths whose total length lies inside [l, r].

Because the binary search checks feasibility correctly for every candidate x, the highest feasible value is the optimal median.

The solution has three main layers.

The outer layer is binary search on the answer. Since the optimal median must equal some edge beauty already present in the tree, we sort distinct weights and search over them.

The middle layer is the feasibility check. After transforming edges into +1 and -1, we only need to know whether some valid path has nonnegative sum.

The inner layer is centroid decomposition.

The subtle part is the interpretation of the median. Because the problem uses the upper median, the condition becomes:

good edges >= bad edges

not strictly greater.

Another easy mistake is combining paths from the same subtree during centroid processing. That would create a path that does not actually pass through the centroid. The implementation avoids this by querying first and inserting afterward for each subtree.

The segment tree stores pairs:

(maximum sum, endpoint vertex)

so we can reconstruct an actual answer path instead of only checking existence.

The collect DFS stops when depth exceeds R. This pruning is crucial for performance.

Finally, the decomposition recursion marks centroids as dead and never revisits them. This guarantees the usual O(n log n) total complexity for centroid decomposition.
